Heroes in action: Pritzwalk Fire Department gives out awards!

On Friday evening, the Pritzwalk fire department appointed several new youth officers at the Pritzwalk Cultural Center, who will now be responsible for looking after around 160 children and young people in the local fire departments. The district youth officer Björn Menk was also present at this festive awards event, which attracted numerous visitors. At the top is the city youth officer Elisabeth Buschow, supported by her deputy Tobias Ramin-Gerstmeier and other committed helpers: Antje Gawenda, Steven Kanis, René Frey and Clemens Lossow. This appointment is an important step to further strengthen the youth fire brigade and to inspire young people to join the voluntary fire brigade. The MAZ reports.

During the evening, 38 firefighters from eleven local fire departments were honored for their many years of loyalty and tireless commitment. Among those honored are even members who have been loyal to the fire department for 60 years! Mayor Dr. Ronald Thiel took the time to acknowledge the voluntary commitment of the fire brigade members in his speech, while Peter Gronau from the age and honor department moderated the evening.

Honorary awards for long-term service

The awards were presented in various categories to honor the loyal service of fire department members:

  • Löschgruppe Alt Krüssow: Reinhard Buder (20 Jahre – Bronze, 30 Jahre – Silber)
  • Ortsfeuerwehr Beveringen: Ingrid Benn, Wilfriede Bergmann, Ruth Jaeger, Marlies Jahrmärker, Margot Krüger (60 Jahre – Gold)
  • Ortsfeuerwehr Buchholz: Maximilian Ramin (10 Jahre – Kupfer), Manuela Haase-Meyer (30 Jahre – Silber), Erika Pulkenat (50 Jahre – Gold), Hans-Dieter Albrecht (60 Jahre – Gold)
  • Ortsfeuerwehr Falkenhagen: Olaf Kühnert, Sebastian Zander (10 Jahre – Kupfer), Ron Schröder, Sebastian Weckel (20 Jahre – Bronze)
  • Weitere Auszeichnungen für verschiedene Ortsfeuerwehren wie Kemnitz, Pritzwalk und Schönhagen

The loyalty medal is awarded for special achievements and complete membership in the volunteer fire brigades and highlights the important role of fire brigade training in the region.

Current missions and challenges

While these celebrations were taking place, the Pritzwalk fire department was also busy with an urgent rescue mission. Recently the fire department was alerted to a “person in the water” operation. The first police and rescue services were quickly on site to assess the situation. The fire department led the coordination of the operation, using an inflatable boat and a drone with a thermal imaging camera to support the search. The person was eventually found and taken to the hospital the Pritzwalk fire department reports.

Overall, it is clear that the volunteer members of the fire department are not only passionate about the safety of their community, but are also prepared to take on new general challenges. The membership numbers for 2025 are already being recorded and the regional associations are in the starting blocks to evaluate the reporting years. How the youth fire brigade reports, the focus on the future development of membership numbers and the constant support of the youth fire brigade remains central for the coming years.
