Perleberg is blossoming: citizens are shaping their city center together!

Great things are being achieved in the picturesque town of Perleberg: A committed group of citizens have come together to volunteer to build furniture and plant containers. The heart of this initiative is the “We do Prignitz” project, which was financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from July 2021 to June 2024. The aim of this project was to noticeably increase the quality of life in the city center and to encourage citizens to actively participate. The project, which places a strong focus on sustainable urban development, has already borne fruit during its lifetime, but the Perlebergers are now continuing their commitment, even if the official end of the funding has already been reached. They were particularly creative in April and May 2024, when additional benches and plant containers were built from wooden pallets. The newest plant container, directly in front of St. Jacobi Church, was lovingly planted with their own plants by a young family. The owners of neighboring businesses take care of the plants, and committed residents also lend their green fingers and take care of the irrigation at other locations. The project is cross-generational and attracts participants from young to old, which makes it particularly lively. During the last construction dates, 18 or 21 people came together, and with materials still available, more street furniture is in the starting blocks.

What's next? Another construction meeting planned for fall 2024. The aim of these activities remains clear: to make Perleberg's city center more attractive and to motivate citizens to help shape it. Thanks to the cost-effective pallet furniture, visible results can be quickly achieved that contribute to the revitalization of the city.

Creative ideas for a lively city center

But the initiatives in Perleberg do not end there. As part of the city laboratory's discussions on revitalizing the city center, the “City Initiative Perleberg” threw out more creative suggestions. What drove this discussion was the desire to revive unused buildings such as the old imperial post office and the warehouse at the Schuhmarkt. The first measures are already underway, including dance events for different age groups, such as a club night in the old post office. The efforts of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning were even recognized with an award in the inner city competition, an initiative that anchors creative ideas and projects for lively inner cities.

This concept receives new impetus not only through the street furniture, but also through the planned events that are intended to bring young and old together. The ministry praises the Perlebergers' commitment and emphasizes the importance of lively inner cities where community and creativity go hand in hand.

The exchange about such initiatives is also important in order to examine how these projects can be supported sustainably. The “City Laboratory” on Bäckerstrasse is open to further ideas about city beautification, and everyone can make their contribution. This makes Perleberg a place where everyone can create a piece of home - from the youngest up-and-coming talents to the experienced seniors.
