Individually made shelves find their place in the basement of the town hall and the employees are busy assembling lights and packing boxes. All of this is done in the context of an important project that aims to offer citizens better access to historical documents. Nordkurier reports that the opening of the new archive on June 28, at the celebrations of the town hall festival, will take place.

The town hall festival is celebrating its 111th birthday this year, one more reason to invite the residents to get to know the new archive. However, the city archivist Carola Lembke points out that not everything will be perfectly granted on the open day. Nevertheless, visitors can visit the charming rooms with wood paneling, paintings and colorful glass windows. In the public area of the archive, guests can expect newspaper archives, magistrate protocols, civil status documents and even CDs as well as videos that contribute to the history of the city.

Pupils and students can find valuable information for their work here- from Bachelor to master's theses.

The total costs for the conversion of the archive amount to 105,000 euros for structural maintenance and 140,000 euros for new equipment. The Block Ladenbau company from Bad Wilsnack takes care of the interior, while the Tischlerei Ehrhorn takes over the floor work. The interest in archives and history is widespread, and not only in Germany. In Latvia, for example, the Latvian state historical archive preserves documents from 1220 to 1945. Here, too, there are valuable insights into the past with collections from different epochs, some of which were also created during the German occupation. Such an exchange of historical documents can also initiate an interesting dialogue in Wittenberge.

The city of Wittenberge sets a sign of appreciation of its own history by opening the show archive and invites all citizens to actively participate. A visit will definitely be worthwhile!
