Neuruppin celebrates: City Wall Trail Communication” receives an award!

History comes to life in Neuruppin, the charming town in the heart of Brandenburg. On June 27, 2025, a very special event will be celebrated here: the awarding of the city wall path “Communication” as Monument of the Month for 2025. This year the motto is “Moving people: the old town creates connection”. More than 70 kilometers north of Berlin, directly on the picturesque Ruppiner Lake, Neuruppin has positioned itself as the largest city in the region and a tourist highlight, not least because of its impressive old town with classicist and Wilhelminian style buildings that are listed buildings. That reports Neuruppin.de.

The “Communication” city wall trail itself invites you to take an approximately 4-kilometer-long tour that connects the old town with neighboring urban areas, the ramparts and Lake Ruppiner. The name comes from the French term “voie de communication”, which underlines the history and function of this path. Over the last two decades, the path has been transformed into an attractive pedestrian and cycle path, with eight out of ten key sections having already been renovated. More than 1.78 million euros from urban development funding and 615,000 euros from European funds flowed into the renovation, and further construction phases between Martin-Niemöller-Platz and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße are planned from 2026.

The award occasion

The celebratory award event will take place on June 27th at 3 p.m. at the intersection between Karl-Marx-Straße and Schifferstraße, behind Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße 14. Mayor Nico Ruhle will open the event, followed by greetings from Claudia Mucha, head of the office of the Working Group for Cities with Historic City Centers. Jan Juraschek, head of the building department, will speak in his lecture about the importance of the city wall path and present the award. After the award ceremony, he will provide information about the comprehensive renovation plans from 2026. The event not only offers a look at today's award, but also at the future of the city and its monuments.

The subsequent summer theater with the comedy “The New Menoza”, which begins at 7 p.m., rounds off the day. Here the connection between culture and history in Neuruppin can be experienced.

Urban monument protection in Neuruppin

The award for the city wall path is part of a comprehensive urban monument program that has existed since the Neuruppin Declaration of 1991. These initiatives contribute to the revitalization of the old town and promote mobility in the city. Not only residents benefit from high-quality urban infrastructure, but also tourists who want to discover the charm and history of the city. Loud stadtebaufoerderung.info, other historical monuments in Brandenburg will now also receive recognition, as twelve monuments will be honored in 2025.

The positive development is not only inspiring citizens, but also the city administration, which is planning, among other things, measures to improve public space and eliminate vacancies. Despite positive population development, the old town also has to contend with a high vacancy rate.

Another component of the funding is the urban development funding program for urban monument protection, which continues to work closely with the expert group for monument protection. This group, founded in 1991, is an important part of urban development and monument protection policy in the region, such as stadtwende.de explained.

The historic old town of Neuruppin is not only a place of history, but also a living passenger into the future, where history and modern life go hand in hand. Neuruppin remains a place where history can be experienced and is worth preserving, and where people will continue to be connected to one another in the future.
