Construction starts for B103: New roads and cycle paths between Kyritz and Pritzwalk!
An important infrastructure project began on Monday in Brandenburg: Transport Minister Detlef Tabbert (BSW) held the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the renewal of the B103 federal highway between Kyritz and Vehlow (municipality of Gumtow). This construction project is supplemented by the construction of a new cycle path, which is intended to create an important connection between the districts of Ostprignitz-Ruppin and Prignitz. Steffen Kleiner from the state road department, Volkmar Brühl von Strabag, Kyritz's mayor Nora Görke and Gumtow's head of administration Oliver Nitschke were also present at the event and pointed out the scope of the project.
The route is around 3.5 kilometers long and will replace the already dilapidated cycle path from Kyritz to Gantikow. Construction work on the cycle path will begin in September, and at the same time the road will be renewed in several sections. From August 18th, the B103 will be completely closed in order to renovate a section of around 320 meters. This is just the start, as extensive work on parking spaces, bus stops and the road crossing in Gantikow is planned between September 8th and the end of 2025. The new construction of the cycle path from Gantikow to Vehlow also starts on the same day.
Diversion and budgets
The diversion will take place via the B5 and B107 from August 18th, although the towns of Gantikow and Vehlow will remain accessible. The total scope of the project is estimated at around 8.4 million euros, with significant support of 8.3 million euros coming from federal funds. The city of Kyritz is contributing over 59,000 euros and the municipality of Gumtow around 64,000 euros towards the total costs. Mayor Görke underlined the enormous importance of the project and highlighted the residents' long-standing commitment to the cycle path, while at the same time expressing the desire for further connections towards Pritzwalk and Perleberg.
Brandenburg has focused heavily on improving road infrastructure. In 2023, 447 million euros flowed into road construction projects, with 121 projects planned for 2024. This includes 56 measures on federal roads, 65 on state roads and numerous cycle path projects. The environmental and nature conservation measures in these construction projects are also very important in order to adequately meet the challenges of climate change. For example, a pilot project in the Bad Freienwalde road maintenance department is investigating new mowing techniques in order to promote the insect population by adapting the care of the green verges.
Future of the transport infrastructure in Brandenburg
The importance of a well-developed road network for mobility in Brandenburg is also emphasized by Transport Minister Rainer Genilke. In order to continue to maintain and expand the roads, around 439 million euros are available for 2024 to further promote cycle paths in addition to the roads. The 2024 projects include, among other things, the planned bypass in Cottbus, several through-town routes and the renovation of important bridges.
Overall, it is clear that Brandenburg's strategy focuses on both the preservation and the urgently needed expansion of transport connections. The new B103 and the associated cycle path achievements are only part of a comprehensive plan that is intended to significantly improve mobility in the region.
